Games like Helldivers

Helldivers went through drastic changes between Helldivers 1 and Helldivers 2. The first Helldivers game features a top-down view. Which provides a strategic, eye-in-the-sky overview of the battlefield, while Helldivers 2 adopts a third-person over-the-shoulder perspective. Another (more subtle difference) is – Unlike the second Helldivers, Helldivers 1 can be played offline. Helldivers can not. Which is why I decided to share some games like Helldivers 1.

Good ole bug-shooting games which can be played offline.

Starship Troopers: Extermination (online only)

I wish Starship Troopers: Extermination could be played offline. It would have been a great offline competitor for the first Helldivers. But, unfortunately, Starship Troopers: Extermination is an online only game. Hopefully, that will one day change (stranger things have happened).

Earth Defense Force 5 (games like Helldivers)

If you wish Helldivers 2 had an offline mode, this would be your best alternative – Earth Defense Force 5. Now, granted, the game now has a new installment (Earth Defense Force 6) but several user reviews recommend EDF5 over EDF6.

And as far as games like Helldivers go, you can’t get more accurate than this.

Granted, the EDF franchise has a less-polished look in their gameplay and graphics. Especially when compared with Helldivers or Helldivers 2. But, nevertheless… if you can embrace the lower quality graphics and the somewhat steeper learning curve (caused by an inadequate tutorial system)you would probably enjoy this game.

Conclusion on games like Helldivers

As a longstanding fan of the original Helldivers game, I was rather disappointed that the latest installment went and dropped features like offline-playability. Luckily, we have other studios stepping up to deliver. And, if you have more games like Helldivers that you wish to have featured on this blog, then, feel free to comment below.
