A while back, the guys at Digital Cybercherries made a Toy-Story-like, action-figure game worth checking out! If you love supporting small studios that are passionate about their craft, then grab yourself a free demo-copy of HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed.
The game is now fully-polished (as any game can be). And those who enjoy the free demo can proceed ahead by grabbing the full buffet. Like I did. Having fiddled around with the demo a bit, I fell in love with HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed, and bought it. And now, having played it for 1.1 hours (according to my Steam account), I’m ready to dish out my first impressions.
My first impressions
At first, I was super excited about the idea of playing a third-person shooter, as a toy-sized, action-figure. What other size is there, lol?
My initial excitement dwindled a bit, during the tutorial.
I started to feel as if the controls were a bit heavy, some would say clunky. I assumed that, maybe that could just be blamed on my mid-range PC… maybe. But it was starting to feel as if the game was not as “action-packed” and EXPLOSIVE and punchy, as one would hope. Later on, I realised that I was kinda wrong.
Kinda.
When you are playing a ‘war game,’ nobody wants to spend the whole time feeling like, they are shooting rubber bullets. Feeling no punch, or gruesome guts! None of that was present for me, in the tutorial. But that’s just it… these are action-figures! And that will eventually grow on you, eventually! As your inner/forgotten/neglected child, slowly starts to resurface. Game by game, with each new map. And since these are plastic toys, perhaps they have been programmed to move in the same manner in which a toy would move. Which would make the slight stiffness, an excellent touch.
The game is action-packed, its very fun! And yes, I know that nowadays people don’t care about the f-word (fun) when you are reviewing a game. These days, its all become framerates this, and next gen that! Lots of talk about tech and zero emphases on the “fun-ess” of a game. But I’m always about fun, replayability, longevity, and getting my money’s worth.
But ealier, when I said “kinda” I also meant that.

The game feels a bit heavier on my machine than I would have hoped. But if you’ve got a gaming beast, then that might not be an issue. I’m not saying its unplayable. I just expected a game about “toys” to be… a bit lighter. And maybe its not the specs, maybe its the controls. Or, maybe its just me.
Nevertheless, I played this game for over an hour. And I really love its maps!
I can not praise the maps enough. Its a lot of fun running over kitchen counters, and climbing empty appliance-boxes. And in some stages, the lighting is just dramatically gorgeous! The textures feel right, and as an action-figure-side soldier, you definitely get immersed in the massive scale of the rooms.
I haven’t even played in the backyard yet, but I am already in love with the maps.
Conclusion
And in conclusion, allow me to say a thing or two about the bots. So far, I have had fun with them… lots of fun! The bots can be accessed ‘offline’ which is a really big deal on this site! So yay! Three cheers for offline-bots!
I had fun with the bots, and I will revisit the game again in order to come up with a more in-depth ‘bot review.’ I’m hoping that the game allows you to tune their difficult-level. And in my first-impressions, the bots seemed to be competently challenging to play with. Though I did notice one or two of them looking in the wrong direction, during my play. Or maybe the difficult level was a tard too low, or maybe they were hiding, or preying on someone else.
Having said all that, my recommendation is that: you should definitely try out the free demo on Steam. At the very least. And don’t forget to comment below, and let me know what you think about this game.
