Psychonauts 2: my very first impressions

Talk about coming late to the party! I just recently purchased Psychonauts 2, and boy… I’m loving the mechanics. I’m really enjoying the ride, a whole lot. As of now, I’ve only played less than an hour. But, I have already seen enough uniqueness to love it.

Double Fine Productions‘ game: Psychonauts 2, is bursting with charm and originality! So far, I’ve barely dug into the campaign but I’m already Googling for “other games like Psychonauts.” Without much success, except for tons of references that keep pointing me towards Alice: Madness Returns. Which looks very promising, in its own right. I’m still to play that game, but I hear good things.

As I proceed to encourage you to grab a copy of Pyschonauts, I’m not oblivious to the fact that some gamers seem to prefer the first installment of Psychonauts. So, I also went and bought the first game. out of curiosity.

And, its true – the first game seems to be a lot of fun, too. It might be more fun, I don’t know. But, its now much older and harder to visually enjoy. Which means a lot coming from someone that repeatedly says – games should be more “fun focused” now, and stop chasing next gen graphics, and greedily structured live-service models.

In conclusion, this franchise is a real gem! And, I’ve genuinely struggled to find game studio and IP which does what Double Fine Productions has done with Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2. I hope to see more studios taking brave steps, and bolder creative directions like that too.

About this blog

Are you also struggling to find good, enjoyable, high quality video games? Me too, along with good-chunk of modern gamers. And, because of that: I started a blog that showcases the problems we have (as gamers). Alongside the solutions we need, stuff like; reviving neglected genres, embracing offline gaming, and the power of having AI players (bots). Well-made offline bots, with adjustable difficulty levels.
