Things we (already) don’t like about: Squid Game Unleashed

As expected, mega corps like Netflix are focused on milking their cash cows, to the last cent. Squid Game now has a game, and its called Squid Game: Unleashed. Is this game worth your time? Here are some things we don’t like, already.

Right off the bat, the feel and tone of the game seems… off. Netflix has given the game’s characters some ragdoll-like physics which is probably aimed at making the game: child-friendly. Which (I strongly feel) is the wrong move, given the emotionally-complex nature of the source material. Squid Games was never meant to be a Dumb Ways To Die kinda brand.

Mobile only? Sigh!

So far, all signs seem to suggest that Squid Game Unleashed is going to be a mobile-only game. Which means no PC/Steam, and (probably) no console versions. Sigh (again)… I don’t mean to shootdown mobile games, but with IP as big as Squid Games, you’d expect a version for PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, etc. And, not just mobile. This IP (if handled correctly) could have become an eSport, with its own professional players, and its own tournaments, and prize money – like League of Legends. But, you won’t get any of that from a ragdoll mobile game. Imagine that – Squid Game Unleashed players coming on stage, in their team tracksuits. Sigh!

Lastly, I doubt if this game will have an offline mode. Netflix’s decision to ‘go mobile’ is rather tragic, because Squid Games are a perfect place to have bots, good offline bots. Or even just local coop on PC. So that players can get the same feel and scale of being in an actual Squid Game Tournament. You can still have bots, and offline modes of mobile games… but its probably not going to happen.

What a wasted opportunity!
