What makes Boomerang Fu perfect?

Published on

These days, when it comes to video games, you rarely hear about ‘fun’ as a goal. Most developers talk about next gen this, raytracing that, multiplayer servers this. Nowadays, few devs can say, “Our new game is fun!” Except the guys who made Boomerang Fu and a few others alike.

Another good example of a ‘fun game’ would be – Sunset Overdrive! Other than games like that, not many game titles focus on being ‘fun’ these days. What makes a game fun? Any game? The Developers! Devs who love their craft, make games like Boomerang Fu perfect! Before the game even comes, the drive for ‘fun games’ should ideally start from within the studio.

When I picked up Cranky Watermelon’s 2020 game, I loved it. I had actual fun! Lots of fun. That was my first impression, I thought – hmmm, what a fun little game! Fun, is not an F-word you’ll hear or see a lot in today’s gaming industry. But, Boomerang Fu ticked that box for me. Along with these other boxes:

  1. You can play it offline, with bots. Good bots!
  2. Secondly, you can play with friends on the couch
  3. And, it accepted any and all joypads (I’ve had issues with some games not recognizing some pads)
  4. Lastly, it’s only 600mb in size (that’s tiny!)

I found the characters in this game to be very cute and colourful. And, the power-ups are hilariously fun to use, from; exploding boomerang, double boomerangs, ice boomerangs, telekinetic boomerangs, you get the picture. And, most of the power-ups can be combined into one super power-up!

My first impressions of Boomerang Fu

Now, I must say; after my first impressions… this game genuinely feels like it was made by game-lovers! The after-match awards are a fun touch, players getting awarded medals like: Rambo, Fastest Reflexes, Quick Draw, Opportunist, etc. Which draws lots of laughter in the room, as you compare and contrast your various achievements, and mishaps.

In conclusion, I don’t see why you shouldn’t grab yourself a copy of the well-polished indie game today. Lets start having fun in games, again!
